Characterisation - Setting the Scene

Characters are really important in film. They play a huge part in conveying messages about plot.

What they do, say (and how they say it), wear and what other people say about them all convey messages about the role and representation of a character.

Think about your favourite film - who are the key characters? What are they like? How are we meant to relate to them? What is their role in the narrative?

What impression do you get of these characters here from the film A Clockwork Orange?

Targeting Audiences

There are 4 golden questions when considering the concept of audience within media studies:

1. Who is the target audience of the text?

2. What does the audience expect from the text?

3. How does the text appeal to or cater for the target audience?

4. To what extent does the target audience feel the text is successful in targeting them?

Look at the picture below of Alice in Wonderland. How can you answer these questions in relation to this text?
